Honoring Sanctuary

Lyn Miller-Lachmann, author of Gringolandia, recently reviewed Journey of Dreams in the Times Union, in upstate New York. She recognized the nod to Rev. John Fife of Southside Presbyterian, the first Sanctuary Church as well as author, philosopher and Quaker founder of the Sanctuary Movement Jim Corbett. Other players who I imaged when writing were Marianna Neil (Hermana), Amy Shubitz (Amelia), Bernie Mueller and Ricardo Elford. But there were so many.

During filming of a documentary I heard Tom Ford tell a heart-tugging story about what it felt like for him to reach out and receive a small child passed over the fence who immediately snuggled – trusting this giant of a stranger.

The funny story of Barbara Silver’s arrest in Mexico. When Amy called to speak to her in jail, she was told Barbara wasn’t there. “Where was she?” Amy demanded. “Over at the Cantina, enjoying a cervesa.” So many stories…a few of them funny, but most speak of the heroism of people who put their comfort and security on the line to save the lives of refugees.

So thanks for catching that Lyn! Her book Gringolandia takes on oppression from Chile for high school students. It’s a book adults too will have a hard time putting down.

Reviews Rock!

After all that time alone with Tomasa and her family — it’s been overwhelming to hear people talk and to read about the book: Kirkus’ stared review called Journey of Dreams “outstanding.” School Library Journal used words like “well paced” and “suspenseful.” Booklist: “More than the local color, readers will be held by the escape adventure, and even more by the searing family drama.” Publishers Weekly: “At once lyrical and starkly realistic.” I’m still speechless — and anyone who knows me — knows that’s a feat!

Ten years from idea to holding the book in my hands…

Book cover of Journey of DreamsJourney of Dreams hits bookstores in the US this month and I’m stoked! My only regret is that my thank-you was too long to make it into the book. So here’s my chance:

Journey of Dreams is dedicated to Marianna Neil with much gratitude for all your encouragement, the questions answered, every bit of advice, the boxes of books, videos and stories, and for permission to move forward.

To Amy Shubitz who brought me into the Hopi Foundation fold and told me stories that changed everything. My only regret is being too shy to write them down from the start.

To the families who shared and verified details, especially my cultural consultants Vicky, Juana, Herminia, Catalina and Roberto, Laurie, Sebastian, Flor, Patty, and Wendy.

To those who took part in the Sanctuary Movement, a civil initiative that saved tens of thousands of lives.

To Steve and Evan for their patience and encouragement.

To all those who serve survivors and their families especially my respected friends in the Hopi Foundation and Owl and Panther communities.

To all those who continue to serve Guatemala including: GUAMAP, St. Michael’s Guatemalan Project and Guatemalan Human Rights Commission.

To my writing colleagues, Kay Sather, Fran Buss, Gerry Barton, Lynne Weinberg, Juanita Havill, Judy Dyl, Carol Martin, Charlene Profiri, as well as Meg Files and Cornelia and Mel Carlson who pushed me with deadlines, questions and their keen observations.

To my friends and family who were patient as I pushed through my obsession.

To Kendra and Minju who didn’t give up.

To Yvonne for her guidance and skill that made it even better.

To Ani for teaching how to let Tomasa find her audience.

And to Tomasa; Thank you for whispering your story in my ear and speaking to my heart. I will miss you.
