Journey of Dreams hits bookstores in the US this month and I’m stoked! My only regret is that my thank-you was too long to make it into the book. So here’s my chance:
Journey of Dreams is dedicated to Marianna Neil with much gratitude for all your encouragement, the questions answered, every bit of advice, the boxes of books, videos and stories, and for permission to move forward.
To Amy Shubitz who brought me into the Hopi Foundation fold and told me stories that changed everything. My only regret is being too shy to write them down from the start.
To the families who shared and verified details, especially my cultural consultants Vicky, Juana, Herminia, Catalina and Roberto, Laurie, Sebastian, Flor, Patty, and Wendy.
To those who took part in the Sanctuary Movement, a civil initiative that saved tens of thousands of lives.
To Steve and Evan for their patience and encouragement.
To all those who serve survivors and their families especially my respected friends in the Hopi Foundation and Owl and Panther communities.
To all those who continue to serve Guatemala including: GUAMAP, St. Michael’s Guatemalan Project and Guatemalan Human Rights Commission.
To my writing colleagues, Kay Sather, Fran Buss, Gerry Barton, Lynne Weinberg, Juanita Havill, Judy Dyl, Carol Martin, Charlene Profiri, as well as Meg Files and Cornelia and Mel Carlson who pushed me with deadlines, questions and their keen observations.
To my friends and family who were patient as I pushed through my obsession.
To Kendra and Minju who didn’t give up.
To Yvonne for her guidance and skill that made it even better.
To Ani for teaching how to let Tomasa find her audience.
And to Tomasa; Thank you for whispering your story in my ear and speaking to my heart. I will miss you.
